In optimal control problems with multiple time scale dynamics, the solution is - after a short phase of relaxation - dominated by the slow modes. Via a so called Slow Invariant Manifold (SIM), it is possible the reconstruct the fast modes out of slow ones. Therefore, the calculation/approximation of the SIM is very import for reducing the order of the model. Embedding this approximation of the SIM in the optimal control problem plays a key role for ecient model order reduction and is one of the aims of my PhD studies.
