Wake modelling is necessary for realistic modelling of conventional wind energy systems. We might reasonably guess that wake modelling might be necessary for the realistic modelling of multi-kite airborne wind energy (AWE) systems. Further, wake models can be highly non-linear, and therefore quite expensive in an optimal control setting. Of the types of wake models, lifting-line models (LLT) are generally considered to be reasonably accurate while being relatively computationally inexpensive. But, we can deal with non-linearity by lifting. Therefore, we will use lifting (and the solver IPOPT, and the toolbox awebox) to solve the multi-kite AWE OCP with an LLT wake model.
