Active seat suspension systems offer a promising solution for improving ride comfort in autonomous vehicles, thus facilitating execution of non-driving-related tasks, as experimentally demonstrated in a previous study. This research addresses development of model predictive controls (MPC) for an active vehicle seat suspension system, as a key activity within the DAVAS research project. The proposed control system is of a hierarchical structure consisting of a low-level control strategy that compensates for actuator nonlinearity, inertia, and friction effects, and a high-level MPC strategy aimed at minimizing RMS vertical seat acceleration. The MPC formulation incorporates system physical constraints and road disturbance preview information to anticipate upcoming road irregularities and improve vibration suppression. Effectiveness of the control strategy will be demonstrated through simulation and experimental results.
