Abstract: Direct Collocation is a powerful method to efficiently and reliably solve optimal control problems where piecewise polynomial functions are used to approximate the problems solution. This continuous approximation can be used in post-processing to estimate the numerical accuracy of the solution. Based on such an analysis mesh refinement iteratively improves the mesh and the solutions until a target accuracy is reached. In the search for the most powerful grid, we attempt to combine such a mesh refinement with our existing methods to reliably and efficiently solve optimal control problems of all kinds. We demonstrate the idea on both a singular-arc and an Airborne-Wind Energy problem.
